Help in Your Area

As part of this assignment, I’ve gathered a list of resources that will help people living in the South Puget Sound area. Included cities would be Auburn, Algona/Pacific, Sumner, Kent, Renton, Federal Way, Covington, Puyallup, Buckley, and Bonney Lake, as well as any outlying area. The reason two counties are presented is because of the geographical makeup of the area. Having grown up in Lake Tapps, I was basically on the border of King and Pierce Counties, with every city represented within reasonable travel distance.

If you are having problems gaining access to computers or other technology and live in the South Puget Sound area, I recommend the following locations.

The following links are all part of the King County Library System (KCLS) or Pierce County Library System. Each location offers free computer use as well as internet access and basic office productivity software to library card holders. Some services are also available at each location for acquiring help with specific computer related questions. These locations fall within Auburn and the surrounding area. Click on any of the associated links for more information about each branch. To find a branch outside this area please visit this link and select the area you are looking for. The next two programs are funded by people, businesses, and governments willing to donate to help solve the problem of the digital divide in our area. Along with monetary donations, people are willing to come forward and volunteer their time in order to help achieve an environment where both access and learning are possible. For more information follow either link to each group’s homepage.

Digital Promise
http://www.digital-promise.org/index.htm
Started in 1997, Digital Promise is an outreach program designed to get access to the people. They have locations all over Washington, including one in the Renton Highlands. While most of their locations are outside the greater South Puget Sound valley, they offer a wide range of services including knowledgeable staff, computer and internet access, and a learning environment designed to break the vicious cycle of the digital divide.

Seattle Community Network (SCN)
http://www.scn.org/
Founded in 1994, the Seattle Community Network offers computer access to the general public. According to their website the SCN “is a free public-access computer network. We have been privileged to partner with the Seattle Public Library from our beginnings in 1994. SCN was originally a project of the Seattle Chapter of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility (CPSR). In 1995 the Seattle Community Network Association (SCNA) was incorporated as a separate non-profit organization. SCN is an all-volunteer organization. Our primary source of funds are the contributions made by our donors. SCNA is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.”
